Strange or unusual way to start, but here goes.
Leviticus 23: 27 Howbeit on the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement; there shall be a holy convocation unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; and ye shall bring an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
28 And ye shall do no manner of work in that same day; for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God.
29 For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from his people.
That is enough for the moment. In English verse 27 has “day of atonement” {יום הכפ רים היא}and “afflict your souls”. That is not exactly what the Hebrew says. מקרא-קדש יהוה לכם ועניתם, את-נפשתיכם
“The Lord hath sanctified you, and you answered them, Your soul” This is not a straight word for word translation.
My reading is “You answer of your soul, then THE LORD sanctifies you.” The point I am attempting you make, is that on the Tenth Day of the Seventh Month, every year we are called to answer for our souls.

To me this says that you must consider your actions against your soul to own them and be accountable, then seek forgiveness from the LORD GOD, who will Sanctify(Cleans) your soul of the Sin. In other words you are required to make it right with Hashem(The ALMIGHTY GOD Father of Your Soul). For on one a year, all of the Children of Jacob, could be without sin, but not holy or righteous, which require your actions to be just and righteous according to the WORD of The LORD by writings of Moses.
At this point I remind you that “Exodus 34:7 keeping mercy unto the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin; and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and unto the fourth generation.”
The result seems to be that you can be forgiven, but your past actions still have consequences in the world. It is then upon you to repair your actions in the world. The “fathers upon the children” I explain thusly: If you are, say a thief; you have been blessed with son(s) and/or daughter(s), and you turn back from doing that which is evil, and toward the GOD OF ISRAEL(you save your soul). Then you tell your children, “do not to steal, do not to act as I have”, they will still act as you have acted, because they saw, and they learned from you. They may yet change their choices, as you have done, but it will be harder for them to learn a new path when they are more than eight or nine years old. Better to not teach them in the first place, or better yet, just be righteous before the LORD GOD. What your children learned from you and your actions, their children will learn from them, . . . . until one of them decides for themselves this is wrong and rebels against the father’s actions.
Among most, there seems to be misunderstandings regarding the day and the purpose.

The LAW According to the Hand Of Moses.
Exodus 23: (This is part of the Covenant at Sinai.)
26 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:

Numbers 29:

10 a several tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs;
11 one he-goat for a sin-offering; beside the sin-offering of atonement, and the continual burnt-offering, and the meal-offering thereof, and their drink-offerings.
So, what we have, is a day where “to make atonement for the children of Israel because of all their sins once in the year”(from Leviticus 16:34), should be without SIN.
This is getting interesting for me. We actually have a day set aside, during the seventh month(the Sabbath Month) where every soul that is in the People Of Ishrael/Israel have atoned for their sins. One other things happens on this day every 50 years. The land returns to the original family and the people are to return to their land. Is this important for something? Everyone, on a single day, are commanded by the LORD Our GOD to return unto HIM. One day, have the fresh, clean start. A day when we could/should all return to Keeping and doing all of the Covenants, Teaching and instruction according to the WORD of GOD given in the Writing of Moses. Thereby arriving at “Exodus 19: 5 Now therefore, if ye will hearken unto My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be Mine own treasure from among all peoples; for all the earth is Mine; 6 and ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.'”; also “Deuteronomy 30: 2 and shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and hearken to His voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.” a real fresh start without our sin dragging us down..
There is always a perfect reason and purpose to what the LORD tells us to do. In fact, this one, you may agree(later) that this is needed for the World but, I am getting ahead of myself.
Their sins once a year, as above are an important clue regarding the purpose. We know that Israel’s name means “Struggles with GOD” and when we remove the dot above the W in the Hebrew language, it maybe a Shin, creating ISHrael, meaning Upright, Righteous or governed by GOD. (Read ISHRAEL?) In the case being made here, both Israel and Ishrael are included in the Day Of Atonement, because one or two people cannot do what is required. All the Children of Jacob must do something, and this DAY is a starting place, where it could happen.
In the Covenant at Sinai, Exodus 23:”29 For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from his people.” And Leviticus 23:”29 For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from his people. 30 And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any manner of work in that same day, that soul will I destroy from among his people.” I see that the ALMIGHTY declares a terrible consequence for Not Doing This. The Soul is cut-off and destroyed, from among the Nation. Yet, those remaining are clean and are The ALMIGHTY’s, by their actions and for a time they are without sin but not Righteous or Holy yet. We still have to live according to the Writings of Moses, then we can become Holy and Righteous.
You have free will. You can choose The LORD or NOT. This is about Your Soul, which you may or may not think you have. But, why such a strong command for the Children to Do THIS? What is so important about one day where all of the Children of Ishrael are without sin?
Before I get to the evidence of the need for this, a short review, or may be you have never heard or thought about this:
While Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 27 and 28 have the curses and the blessings. Curses if WE do not keep HIS Covenants, Laws, Teachings then Blessings for Doing What HE SAID, whether or not you understand, you do what HE said.
Okay, Blessings and Curses, what has this to do with the World(those that are not Children of Jacob) and the World as a whole?
This is what we were chosen to do: We are to show that our LORD is GOD, and That HE IS!, to the whole world. We are building up to the Last Day. The process laid out in Leviticus 26 is demonstrative of this building to an event. An example of this process is “Leviticus 26:18 And if ye will not yet for these things hearken unto Me, then I will chastise you seven times more for your sins.”. That seven times more, gets my attention, and when reading Leviticus 26 you will see that Punishment because of our actions(Sins) and then seven times more, punishment(correction) and HE Checks again and if we have not returned, then seven times more, . . . Until something happens.
So what Happens?
Deuteronomy 30:”1 And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt bethink thyself among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee,
2 and shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and hearken to His voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul;”
Of Verse “8 And thou shalt return and hearken to the voice of the LORD, and do all His commandments which I command thee this day.”
Leviticus 26:39 And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them. 40 And they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, in their treachery which they committed against Me, and also that they have walked contrary unto Me. 41 I also will walk contrary unto them, and bring them into the land of their enemies; if then perchance their uncircumcised heart be humbled, and they then be paid the punishment of their iniquity;
In those two sections we are presented with the trouble being so great for us that WE(the Nation) return unto the GOD that has only wanted us to do what is Right according to HIS laws, wants to take us back. Wants to Bless Us, Protect Us and Treasure Us, for we will be then a LIGHT Unto the Nations(Exodus 19:5 Now therefore, if ye will hearken unto My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be Mine own treasure from among all peoples; for all the earth is Mine; 6 and ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. . . . .’). The result is that the Nations will Know the The LORD is GOD and we are the PROOF.
Bottom Line with the Atoning.
It is one time during the Year that we are ALL be without sin and desiring to be close to OUR GOD. He waits for US and the world NEEDS US to return, so that We Might ALL Find Peace with OUR FATHER.
In case you think this is all good news for the Children of Jacob, and I would love that all of the Children would return but it does not seem to be. Isaiah 10:21 A remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto God the Mighty. 22 For though thy people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them shall return; an extermination is determined, overflowing with righteousness. 23 For an extermination wholly determined shall the Lord, the GOD of hosts, make in the midst of all the earth.
How did we get from ALL to a remnant?
Today is the year 6003, according to the Tanakh. Moses died in 2761 according to the same count. So we have had these Writings 3,242 years. Or not less than 3242 years for the Day of Atonement to make us clean. We have gone through much of the curses listed in Leviticus 26 and those in Deuteronomy 28, we still have not returned. The curses build until we have no choice but to acknowledge and rethink what we have been doing, to strive to get it right for once. To Return to the GOD of Our Fathers, with all of our heart and soul. Looking back on our history through the thousands of years, the pain, suffering and abuse(mild version), even to the Holocaust in Europe, we have not returned back with our hearts, souls and our being, to HASHEM.
What will the event need look like before we even consider rethink our ideas and actions?
